| YEAH !!! got a ticket
..more than doubled price though
but i think The Stooges will get paid decently and not by guest...cuz this WATT hall is only for max. 1400 people.

| Well done ZinZin. Bummer about the price but it should be a hell of a gig. Cheers, Richard |

| stooges in rotterdam!another great show! they opned with the usual loose,down,1969,dog,tv ,they skipped dirt and went into realcool time with stage invasion ,no fun,1970,mindroom ,funhouse, skullring,s&d,i got a right(for me the highlight)thre was en encore with my idea of fun, electric chair and trollin and the it was over ,no double dog. but it was great, the place was packed, though many people from rotterdam couldn't get in because it was sold out through internet presale in half an hour. as far as i know there were no intervieuws around this gig though local tv was filming in the hall(i'll record this station all day and keep you informed if there's any footage) one amstedam guy promised to put his mobilephone footage on youtube. that's it for now! |

| 08.02.08 Iggy and the Stooges Watt, Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Loose, Down on the Street, 1969, I Wanna’ Be Your Dog, TV Eye, Real Cool Time> No Fun!!!, (probably: 1970> Mind Room> Fun House> L.A. Blues), Skull Ring, Search and Destroy> My Idea of Fun> I Gotta Right! E: Trollin’, Little Electric Chair
The missus called me earlier in the day to see how I was handling not having tickets for the Stooges for that evening. They were to play one town away – 15 minutes on a trein – in the renovated and renamed Nighttown, now called the Watt. But we didn’t have tickets. We knew when they were going on sale, but didn’t have the scratch, then. The show sold out in 3 minutes anyway. I had actually put it out of my mind.
So she’s asking me over the g-chat from work how I feel about missing the show and I ask her if she has looked on the Dutch equivalence to Craig’s List to see about prices. (Formerly they were skyhigh!) She found a Nick offering tix for 10 over face. I called him and we made an appointment to meet in front of the Watt. No shit!
So, babysitters, clean house, get kids from school, make dinner, wife gets home – she’ll wait until the last minute to tuck the kids in for the babysitter, I leave on trein to R’dam to meet Nick and it all goes smoothly!
Long line forming. Rainy day in R’dam. So we were all happy to get inside the new venue. Damn, it’s tiny. Kinda like the Knitting Factory in NYC. The bathrooms had wall length windows that looked onto the patio smoking section outside. Everyone outside had a clear view of the man at the closest urinal. Very Dutch I guess. It costs 50 cents to pee. You give your coin to the cleaner lady on watch. No drinks outside; and no smoking anything! on the premises. Officially. I asked. Drinks were fairly priced. A large Grolsch cost me 3 euro 70 cents. I love it when Grolsch is the house beer.
So I call the vrouw to see where she is and she’s in front of the venue. Right on time. Gotta put out her “blowtje” before she comes in. I grab her, kiss her, and push her toward the stage area. We enter just as they begin Loose – killer! We’re in!!!
We had to push through some tightly packed people to get to the rind of the pit, but we made it and ended up within the pit. I wasn’t sure how long the Mrs would stand it, but she loved it! We stayed in the entire time. We had to push ourselves through to get on stage and there we were. I love that shit. I went in the back to see Watt – whatta madman! The guy shoving us offstage at the end was a prick.
The sound was loud and the crowd rambunctious. The show only lasted an hour, but I left utterly fulfilled. They played every song balls out. TV Eye was intense. Funhouse was slinky. Skull Ring kicked my ass. But the Search and Destroy> My Idea of Fun> I Gotta Right! closing explosion made the whole show for me. The music itself kicked my ass, but the ideas going through my head were of a Vietnam veteran, a contemporary imperial soldier and the fact that the imperial-minded soldiers have just as much right to do their thing as I do when I celebrate my right that I got through the punk principle number one. And it is punk for a leader to declare the Rule of Law and then to ignore it, right in front of the world. Such leaders are saying, “Fuck you!” to the civil agreement. That’s the downfall of civilization. Well, anyway, that’s how I saw it during those songs. Jim’s a smart man, I wonder if he put it together that way on purpose. Nice subtle cultural criticism. I’m sure. The encore was ok. It could have used “I’m Fried” to close it off properly.
Mevrouw was havin’ a blast during all this. She got crushed a few times, but I haven’t seen her that shiney in a while. We had a very romantic hour with the Stooges. At one point Iggy says to the crowd, “I am you. I am you.” And this is something that we say to each other. How cute. Iggy reminded me of this. I haven’t been saying it lately. I think the phrase is better that “I love you.” It recognizes the oneness of all – in the Astral Plane maybe like Jonathan Richman would say. Of course I was trying to protect her the entire time. I will never forget the ecstasy in her face as she bounced around within my outstretched arms. At one point she was in line with two other chicks and I got to rest my arms a little. The show was an emotional and physical workout. Wow!
And we stank going home. Iggy and the Stooges are a spiritual recharge; kind of like an aggressive sweat.
So, ironically, Mike Watt and the boys were to be the band to christen the new Watt in R’dam. I heard the new owners wanted Amy Winehouse, but she proved too unreliable! – so they goes for Iggy! Ha! An elder statesman now. I’m glad they did. |
