Laughing I get it.

I just got annoyed that somebody was insulting Ron's playing and connected it with why he was moved to bass without knowing the facts behind it which is basic band history.

Remember Ron was always a bass player first and foremost. That's what he'd been in his bands before the Stooges. And at the start of Raw Power, the band was over, and had been for a year - they'd broken up, seemingly for good, in mid '71.

So it wasn't really a case of Ron being demoted - as far as I understand it Iggy was brought over to London initially for a solo album, with James as collaborator. The band was out of the picture - no one complains about Ron and Scott not being used on Kill City or The Idiot, yet the situation at the time was fairly similar as far as I can tell. It was a new project that only metamorphosed into the Stooges when they realised they were never going to find anyone better.

James Williamson was with The Stooges from the very beginning ! Even being in the Chosen Few with Ron ! Perhaps if James was not sent off at the time, he would have been a founding member as well! Hell yes he should rejoin The Stooges ! Please note that Ron was one of the best bass players ever ! And if were not for the Raw Power era, no one would have ever knew ! They should play any and all Stooges songs ! I feel that Rock Action should have some input on it all ! Being a life long Stooges fan, I would hate to see any other guitarist but The Skull ! Please don't allow them to become some sad Steppenwolf joke !

I wouldn't say it's annoying. Some people just don't know what is the story behind the fact. However, Ron admitted himself that James was more accomplished player than he was. When it comes to insulting, I really don't care what people think e.g. of James. Cuz I am the one of these who enjoy listening to him. And that's enough. I know people say 'his Les Paul tone his horrible', 'he had a bad influence on the Stooges', etc. Fine, they express their views. Which is alright as well. To each his own Smile Btw, I think you're aware of that playing in the wrong key is common among guitarists Smile I heard James making mistakes too. For other guys, check out Hendrix live Very Happy

There's been some interesting points made, particularly in the last page or so, which I hope if JW were to rejoin, might mean some might see it in a different light, and not as heresy.

It's more complicated than that.

Iggy was looking after Number One. James had no reason to do otherwise. Iggy was looking for a new way forward. James provided it. And Ron wasn't writing any more songs.

Ron was not really an ambitious person - James was. But I think we shoudl put paid to the old notion that James was bad, becuase it's out-dated - James was exactly what the Stooges needed at the time.

No James, No Raw Power is a statement i agree on too.

I read also another statement in what you say Paul: like that you think The Stooges in those days (Ron/Scotty/Iggy and no bass player) had their best time behind them > musically.... they were 'done', 'finished' musically. As if there wouldn't have been much more to expect from them musically after the 2 albums they made.
wow.. hope I didn't interpret that rightly..

Thanks for that Paul. I think it's fair to say Ron wasn't that ambitious. Personally I don't thing "Raw Power" has dated.

Very, very well said, Paul. Once again, thanks for providing some much needed objectivity and balance to the Williamson story.

I have to admit I've warmed to the idea of Williamson joining The Stooges. I got so angry and upset at this page since it as made not long after Ron's tragic death.

But for Scott's good I hope Iggy does do something and I can think of nobody better than Williamson to join them. Personally I think they should only play songs from the 72-74 period though and not call themselves The Stooges. But thats just me.

Nobody can replace Ron but Williamson, Iggy and Scott could do something different together.

If Williamson joins (hasn't he already?) i have no worries about them being called Iggy and the Stooges, I always thought it wrong when they were often called by that name from 2003-08 when they were the Stooges. I got a bit bored of the same setlist for five years and hope the "new" band, if it happens play some of the demos from 72-74.
The real problem for me now is Iggy, i do not believe he can recreate the bitchin vocal performances he gave in the early 70's, his voice has changed and is now more suited to jazz crooner than worlds forgotten boy.

What ever comes out of this, I'm along for the ride. Iggy and James are both creative. We might get Hawaiian jazz, but I don't mind.

I'd love to hear Tight Pants, Gimme Some Skin or evena Williamson led I Got A Right but hearing a 62 y/o sing it rather than Iggy at 25 doesn't really do it justice...

That aside there are tons of songs I'd love to hear like Fresh Rag, You Don't Want My Name, Scene of the Crime, I'm Sick of You, basically all the 71/72 stuff plus the Raw Power/Heavy Liquid sets
