Monger...what are the Tipton tapes??

If I may jump in with an answer - Michael Tipton is the man who recorded the Metallic KO shows and, I think, at last a few others. Copies of copies were used for the LP and CD releases. Tipton apparently is still in possession of the original, complete tapes. Hopefully someday we'll get to hear them.

If memory serves; Miss Natalie has more complete info than I have provided.

I am not sure how I feel about the release of Unganos after the major screw up of Rhino's last release. It's one thing to make a mistake but quite another to refuse to correct that mistake while charging a hefty fee. I attended all the Unganos gigs both in February and in August. I can assure all of you that there were no songs titled "Have Some Fun/My Dream is Dead". From this title, I must presume that this song would be the one called "Way Down in Egypt" because Iggy sang "I'm Dead" several times at the end of it. For those of you that ordered the Popped package, I wrote about the gigs in one of the fanzines. It's a shame Rhino did not contact me as I could have assisted in getting all the song titles correct.

If the reissue of FunHouse is the same as the first one, just minus the numbering, that will be a joy to purchase.

Reading through this thread after the euphoria of hearing unganos was going to be released, i realised you have made a very important point Natalie

i didnt realise have some fun/my dream is dead was incorrect, i thought it was just unknown until now (or one of the many, often hilarious, revolving titles) and having you state this as false is already concerning

if they can't even get a track title correct imagine what else is wrong - also why did they then release the album under a title thats is incorrect, "The Stooges: Live at Unganos" would have sufficed, i hate ''have some fun:live at unganos" just sounds stupid and doesnt really add to the gravitas of such an important and well documented recording/performance

actually, i think i might wait a week or two before purchasing this, thank god its not as overpriced as the boxset reissue of the first album was but if there's another major mess up that they will barely acknowledge or correct let alone reimburse people for then i will leave it

its a pity rhino has turned into the company it has, they were one of the few you could trust

however if they're simply replicating the same product as the 1970 boxset, and dont mess it up, that will be great for all the people who can finally hear it, its a great document of that album, and the stooges as a hard working band

I refuse to assume that this will be somehow f'ed up. Rhino is one of the best record labels that exists today and while they have made some errors lately their overall track record is far better than most labels.

We don't like what they did with the last Stooges release. But if that is what they intended to release and we aren't happy it doesn't follow that they owe us a newly mastered release. They did a great job on the Complete Funhouse box. They did a great job on the expanded editions of the first two albums. They are also releaasing the first two on 180 gram vinyl. They have released several vinyl 45s of Stooges tracks - some Cale mixes, some mono mixes. They have treated the Stooges catalog better than anyone else in history has.

Has anyone here heard the Ungano's tape? I had a chance to a couple of months ago but never followed through so I can't begin to presume what is on it. Iggy often gives false titles for songs and that may be what happened here and how they got it wrong - if they got it wrong. We don't know what's there. The title of the CD may also come from something Iggy says on the tape.

I just hate to see people being so negative about this. It is a tremendous opportunity to hear the band we all love from a time that few of us were lucky enough to have heard them.

I seem to recall that this same sort of negativity greeted the news of a remastered Kill City and that turned out to be an astounding and revelatory reissue.

Ultimately if they got the song title wrong or if the CD name is silly; how much does it matter? This is such a great time to be a Stooges fan. Who cares about the little things? The big thing is that Ungano's is finally being released. Why bother looking for flaws?

Maybe it's just because I'm older than most of you all. I love good news and I don't expect to be disappointed. Y'all should try it sometime. It feels pretty good.

And, for the record, I don't mean to be directing this at anyone in particular. It's just sort of an overall trend around these parts to assume the worst. That's the end of my rant. Thank you.

I dont think there's any need for a rant Larry, i was just stating, as Natalie was (who incidentally is a great source of accurate, first hand information from that time) that there might be cause for, if not concern, then at least attention because of some of Rhinos recent release strategies

i was intending to purchase the reissue boxset but couldnt; from what i have read on the forum it isnt just a faulty product it is an incorrect product, in that the it is slower than the tapes it was taken off, this is a significant problem, which from recollection was stated as a result of their mistake when processing the tapes, and hence shouldn't have been released and when it was should have been corrected

rhino were/are a great record label yes (i have a copy of the first 1970 boxset and other rhino products) but if there is a mistake with unganos - again only speculation and obviously i hope there isn't - as there was with the reissue of the first album then it is unfair for them to expect us to pay for it, also they will be releasing an inaccurate recording of an historic gig

also from recollection, others can correct me, they didnt intend to release the reissue boxset set with the john cale mixes slower, i think they knew about it and just released it anyway as it would have meant transferring it again etc

so again, there is no need for a rant, i am immensely excited for this release and i'm sorry to EasyAction but the money i was saving for a Popped package will now go on this release

as Natalie has stated the have some fun / my dream is dead title is incorrect, yes it may appear on the tape but again as Natalie stated all it would have taken is a 5minute call to her to obtain a correct title - or even reading any associated material on unganos as the title Way Down in Egypt is often used for this particular 'freak' performance

sorry that this turned into a reactionary rant but i would just like you to understand i and others were not thinking negatively about this product, far from it, i am so excited for this package that i want it to be correct when i receive - as im sure it will be

also i dont remember any negativity towards the kill city reissue, there may have been but i missed it, incidentally it was also a fantastic product which i was extremely excited for

thanks,
HJW

edit; call me anal but i looked through the thread - there are like two slightly negative comments including natalie's (which is a valid point) and my own

the rest - including my own earlier post - were expressing excitement for this product and the rerelease of the 1970 boxset

again there really is no need for a rant, valid points were raised but we're all still excited for this product

2nd edit;
ok this is anal, i looked through maybe 4 threads on kill city and didnt see any negative discussion even musings on kill city, closest thing might have been someone who was concerned if james had the original tapes and someone saying they didnt want too clean a mix, both of which are hardly negative comments

Well, it was a very mild rant, at best. And I really wasn't directing it at you or your post. As I said, it was more to a general tone that sometimes exists around here. I hope that I'm wrong.

Rather than go back over past threads and posts to prove what I think was my original point; let me just say that I meant no offense and apologize if any was taken.

Out of interest did anyone else get the email Larry got? I'm on the Rhino mailing list but didn't get it.

Technically, I didn't get it. At least not originally. It was sent to a friend who is a writer and I can only assume that it went out to a mailing list of people who can help to publicize the release. Writers need to know what is coming out so that they can pitch stories to magazines, etc. and have time to get stories written and into the issue that most closely coincides with the release date of the product. My friend forwarded it to me.

I'm on Rhino's generic mailing list, as well and I didn't get the email either. I did, however, remove all names of senders and recipients, etc. before I posted it on this thread - for obvious reasons. I can assure that the email is legit - not saying you were doubting its veracity. Just saying.

Thanks for the info Larry.

Thats cool, i hope i didn't come off too ranty or defensive either, misappropriation is a 'pet peeve' of mine and i thought you were directing your post at me as it was the only mention, bar Natalie, of concern with Rhino or the product.

I certainly understand what you mean there can be a bit of negativity or contention on this board, but i see it rather as discussion, compared to some other boards i've been on for other bands or artists its usually kept very polite here

and i have to echo mc in that i'm on the rhino mailing list and didn't get this and as such have to thank you for posting about this release

You're quite right Homesick James - this board is a real pleasure to visit as everyone here is polite, courteous and respectful of each other. That's not to say everyone agrees on everything, of course we don't, but pretty much everyone here seems happy to discuss or debate in a very positive and mature way. This is sadly not my experience generally across the internet where message boards frequently end up in slanging matches and stupid childish insults.
Just goes to show that Stooges fans are way better than that sort of nonsense!

Anyway, after that bit of self congratulation, let's bring this back to the topic in hand - I would hope Rhino have learnt their lesson from the balls up over the wrong-speed-Cale-mixes. Rhino are generally very good with archive releases and I was disappointed with their attitude over this, but in these recession hit days I guess it would not have been cost effective to correct the discs.

After Rhino's fairly major cock up with wrong speed tapes, I think we're quite right to air any concerns over the Unganos tapes. Hopefully we'll all be blown away by this release. Don't especially like the title though. As HJW said above, what's wrong with a simple Live At Unganos?

I don't think we've been especially negative regarding any recent Stooges releases - yes there were concerns when it was announced that Kill City would be remixed - but we are die hard fans here, so it's natural for us to be concerned. That's what we are supposed to do! Fortunately Kill City ended up sounding fantastic...

Enough from me.
Cheers,
Richard

Suggestion: Iggy supplied alternate titles because he didn't want to pay writer's royalties to Pharoah Saunders for "Upper and Lower Egypt". The "Way Down in Egypt" title combined with the clearly lifted riff would probably make a shared writer's credit a legal necessity.

Teddy brings up a very valid point...after we finally hear the thing,we can deduce if that may be the case...good catch,Teddy
Has Rhino (or anyone else) done any other albums as a "complete sessions" like funhouse?...i guess the stooges S/T is about everything, all the different takes,etc....toobad raw power wasnt done that way

I don't know if your question is related to Stooges albums, but there are some Miles Davis collections out there which should be more or less complete. the In A Silent Way sessions remain my favourite. The Complete On The Corner Sessions, well, I don't think they're really complete, but they're incredible and pretty much overkill as it stands.

Actually - all the Miles related 'Complete" sessions are great. The only overkill in my opinion is the Cellar Door 'sessions'. Same songs on 5/7 CD's. The one to have is the Complete Jack Johnson sessions. It's as close as we'll ever get to hearing what Hendrix would have sounded like with Miles (Cosey consideration aside). Major Band of Gypsys vibe throughout the entire 5 disc set. Lifted basslines and all.

The cover looks good enough for me and I'm not expecting hifi-sound, but I would have preferred just "Live at Ungano's" as the title.

hope this won't make the cover. at that time they were still te stooges and not iggy &...
and ain't too crazy bout the title either.a simple descriptive one would have been enough.
i mean, the content is special enough and so it doesn't have to be too fancy.

I totally agree with you...the cover should add every member of that lineup IMO (with Steve Mackay, Bill Cheatham and Zeke Zettner too). And the title "have some fun"...no words. But well at least we have Ungano's finally!!!

I quite like it, those are Leee Childers' Unganos photos, so at least they are using photos from the right gig. I hope we do also get to see Danny Fields' colour photos from Unganos in the booklet, I know they were offered them along with the tape.

Blood, shattered glass, swasticas - just some of the things one of the most wild, unpredictable and dangerous rock bands of all time shoved in the faces of stunned audiences. Recorded at the very peak of the drug fueled madness and self-abuse we give you..."Have Some Fun". A delightful, gay romp of a disc filled with plenty of gosh-darn catchy sing-a-longs you can't half swing to!

I'm with Rhino on this one. I prefer their title. "Way Down In Egypt" just doesn't sound very Stoogian. I can understand why they didn't want to go with it. Who knows, maybe the words "have some fun/my dream is dead" appear in the song, in which case thay didn't really take any artistic liberities at all. It's too early to pass judgement.

As for those bothered by the title of the CD, remember the phrase "have some fun" appears in the song "Little Doll", so its hardly foreign to Stooge sensibilities.

Which is the real crime anyway? Re-titleing some obscure instumental or creating a fake outtake to try to sell a box set?
