I found this on the fascinating It's the Streets you Walked… website (link) - "Psychedelic Stooges" six nights at Steve Paul's The Scene, April 7th-13th 1969, as advertised in the March 20th 1969 Village Voice.

Scroll down and it becomes one night only - "Elektra's new group of significance" - and the balance of the week is Lothar and the Hand People.

Didn't see any of this on the gig list. In fact, the gig list doesn't have them playing outside the midwest until September 1969.

However, they were in NYC recording in April 1969.

Could an April show really have gone undocumented?

Warning - the "It's the..." website is very addictive

Certainly would make sense that they played a gig or two when they were in NY recording, and a pretty hip, informal club like the Scene would have been likely seeing as they would have been totally unknown in NY at the time. Just the kind of place you'd find a drunken Jim Morrison crooning with Jimi Hendrix jamming on guitar.

Sorry to disappoint but the Stooges did not play the Scene. They arrived in NYC March 31 and went into the studio April 1 to start recording "The Stooges". The first gig the Stooges played in NY was at the Palladium in Sept of "69.

Thanks for that confirmation Natalie.

So it looks like these dates at the Scene were pencilled in but the band didn't appear. I wonder why that was. ??

Further confirmation that the April show didn't happen (from the same site)
