I've only seen the one show as I've written but imagine a giant great sounding stereo, that is how good they sounded, they sounded very rehearsed, did not seem screwed up on anything or if they were it didn't show at all. I'm not saying they were boring at all just their sound was so much better than any live thing I've ever heard of them, every live cD or record has been in lo-fi unfortunately, they don't do them justice at all. They sounded very big, very close to the sound of The Stooges LP except much more ballsy sounding.

Bow Down

I downright envy your experience. Damn...

By the way, Ten Years After played Boston Tea Party 3 days: April 15, 16 & 17. Do you remember if Stooges supported them the 3 days?

Here's the BTP 1969's spring schedule (too tiny, I know, sorry):

Hehe, you can see the 3 dates of Ten Year's After, unfortunately can't read the second line, but I don't believe it's the name of the supporting band, but a tagline describing the style of the main band. I'm not that sure if this was the time you saw them...

I found that Ten Years After gig schedule online where you found that hand bill and also found that the(Ten Years After) played another gig on August 2nd 1969. I think that probably would have been the one I saw. They played only that one gig that night. I've been looking online for a while now. I'll keep looking, if this is true The stooges hadn't even been released yet, as it was released in Aug of 69. Incidentally WBCN 104.1 was the best Boston station back then, was an underground station, I think only the third one in the USA.

Gimme Danger, The Story of Iggy Pop

Put the above into Google (books.google.com) and go to page 65, you'll see Ron and Iggy's stories of the Boston concert, it had to be August 2nd 1969 because it's mentioned a few pages earlier about them leaving NY for Boston in August of 69. Ron's account is a lot closer to the way I remember it.

The book was written by Joe Ambrose

That's fucking cool, you've so much background there...

Yeah, TYA played Aug 2nd (don't know how I didn't see that one before). And yes, the album was released by Aug 5th.

Jesus, I'd pay anything for a soundboard tape of that show...

Sickness could you upload the 1968 gig and full Cincinatti concert? I'd be very grateful Smile

Anyone who got some ideas how the line up for the band looked when they first played I got a right and such?
Id be experiencing christmases as I did when I was a kid if they started to play those songs today.
If Ron was the man with the guitar, they should be able to play it them too now!

Basically...

Iggy Pop - vocals
Ron Asheton - guitar
James Williamson - guitar
Scott asheton - drums
Jimmy Recca - bass

Compared to for example the Cincinnati concert they were more into playing and sounding good. I mean there was no throwing shit around, they (besides Iggy) didn't move all that much. They just sounded damn good, as good as any of the other top bands of the time. The Williamson band is my favorite so I can't imagine how rocking they must have sounded doing stuff like Cock In My Pocket, Head On, Hard to beat, etc.

How did they compare to say, Black Sabbath...that's if you saw Sabbath on the first US tour. Cool

Um where to start.....ill start with Cincinatti Pop Festival Smile
He heard of it and thought it would be the second woodstock,The 1969 he missed due to him breaking his leg in football practice.
*FAST FOWARD TIME BUZZZZZZ*
He remembers to fight as hard as he can to get op front but that didnt turn out to well Smile
He only remembers 1970 and TV Eye.
He couldnt see much but the smell was alfull (Gee what could that be Smile
He remembers focosing on Dave Alexander the whole time up untill Iggy was raised.
As he saw him getting raised he saw him shaking his arms and pointing to ppl.
Then he saw him smearing Peanut butter all over his chest.
Again my dad tried to go and touch iggy.
But ended up near Dave Alexander.
He was the only one looking at Dave cuz iggy got the attention.
He remembers Dave bening very focused on his bass.
And thats it for the Cincinatti Pop Festival

Beck thanks very much for sharing that.
As I'm a big Dave Alexander fan it's particularly good to read something about what he was doing at one of the shows. Smile

A couple years late. I never saw Black Sabbath live but I did see a lot of bands back then and they were I would say one of the best rehearsed bands I've ever seen. That was a great night, both bands were great, i couldn't hear anything for 3-4 hours after I left. Iggy was the only one really moving onstage. I was in the third row so I was like really close. Bands back then just sounded much more real than they do now. This place was dark, the stage was well lit and they as someone mentioned about Dave Alexander all seemed intent on their instruments, I think this was a big gig to them, one of their first or their first out of town gig, (not sure about that) but they played like they didn't want to screw up and wanted to sound good, Iggy was very focused, they all were and it showed in their presentation and their sound. They were very clear, you could hear all of them, the sound was balanced and they were loud but not so loud it hurt, they had a good balanced sound. Compared to some of the clips I have seen this one sounded much closer to their records, controlled, powerful and loud. All of them played great, being a bass player myself I was impressed with Dave and his jazz bass, so I remember the Jazz bass you've all seen him with and later with Ron who was also a great bass player. I don't remember what Ron or Scott were playing except that they used the Marshalls which were great amps, same type of amps the MC5 always used once they got going. I don't remember them like the Cincinnati concert, going crazy smearing peanut butter etc. I remember them as a great tight live band. They had lots of bottom being a three piece, just a very powerful sound. Put on The Stooges, turn up your bass and treble and turn the volume up until it shakes the walls but keep it clear, that's how I remember it. Their sound was similar to the Bowie mix of Raw Power which I happen to like a lot or Funhouse, lots of bottom and drums. It's a great memory and the funny thing is I don't have any snapshot memories of many of the bands I've seen over the years but I do have several of the Stooges in my mind from that night.
